Elgar Salut Op12 Afl Pf nsmSalut d’Amour, Op. 12, by Edward Elgar

Transcribed for Alto Flute and Piano by C. A. Vater

Piano Score and Part for Alto Flute, PDF $6.99

The English composer Edward Elgar held many positions throughout his career, including those of organist at St. George’s Roman Catholic Church in Worcester, conductor of the Worcester Philharmonic, Professor of Music at the University of Birmingham, and conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra. He achieved considerable prominence as a result of his many successful orchestral, vocal, and chamber music compositions. Elgar composed this piece in 1888, as an engagement gift to his beloved future wife. Though first written for piano solo, arrangements were created shortly thereafter by the composer himself for violin and piano, and for orchestra. Originally titled “Liebesgruss” (Love’s Greeting), but later changed to Salut d’Amour, the piece is now one of Elgar’s most widely recognized works, and its immense popularity has led to arrangements for a wide variety of other instruments. We provide here a transcription of Salut d’Amour for alto flute and piano, which has been adapted from the editions published by Schott for violin and piano, oboe and piano, or orchestra and which are now in the public domain.

  • Falla - Siete Canciones populares Españolas - Alto Flute (& piano)

Falla 7Canciones afl nsm Seven Spanish Folksongs, by Manuel de Falla

Transcribed for Alto Flute (and piano) by C. A. Vater

    Alto Flute part, PDF $8.99

Manuel de Falla (1876-1946) is regarded as one of the greatest Spanish composers of the twentieth century. His Siete canciones populares españolas (“Seven Spanish Folksongs”) is a cycle of traditional songs from various regions of Spain set for voice and piano. Written in 1914, the work quickly became very popular: in 1925, six of the seven songs were arranged for violin and piano as the Suite populaire espagñole by the Polish violinist, composer and arranger Paul Kochánski, and subsequent versions were designed for solo piano, voice and guitar, piano and cello, and orchestra. We created the Noteworthy Sheet Music alto flute part by adapting ideas from both the Falla vocal line and the Kochánski violin line, modifying pitches, articulations, dynamics, etc. as needed to best suit the alto flute’s range and style.  Our alto flute part is intended to be accompanied by piano using the original Falla score for voice and piano, which is available as a free downloadable pdf at imslp.org; we provide only the transcribed alto flute part in the NSM edition.

The seven songs included in the original voice and piano publication, as well as in our alto flute part edition, are El Paño Moruno (“The Moorish Cloth”), Seguidilla murciana (an old dance form, omitted in the Kochánski violin and piano version), Asturiana (a lament from the northern part of Spain), Jota (a familiar dance form from the north east of Spain), Nana (an Andalusian lullaby), Canción (“Song”), and Polo (reminiscent of the zapateado, a Spanish dance rich in flamenco rhythms). This information and an in-depth analysis of the Siete canciones populares españolas, including historical and regional background, music analysis, and an English translation of the lyrics, can be found in the excellent article by composer and conductor Gianmaria Griglio, co-founder and Artistic Director of ARTax Music.

  • Schnauber - Not-Pooh Songs - Female Voice and Flute or Female Voice and Oboe

Schnauber NotPooh fl nsm Not-Pooh Songs, by Tom Schnauber

For Female Voice and Flute or Female Voice and Oboe, 2 editions

Score for Female Voice and Flute, PDF $18.46
Score for Female Voice and Oboe, PDF $18.46

Tom Schnaubers Not-Pooh Songs are absolutely delightful. The composer has set to music six children’s poems by A. A. Milne, four from When We Were Very Very Young (“The Alchemist”, “The Mirror”, “The Four Friends”, and “If I Were King”) and two from Now We Are Six ("The Charcoal Burner" and "The Engineer"). The work is offered by Noteworthy Sheet Music, LLC in two publications, one for female voice and flute, the other for female voice and oboe. The oboe line is sufficiently different from the flute line in terms of register to warrant it being published as a separate edition (i.e., the flute version makes use of that instrument’s wider range by putting some material in higher octaves). Also, the flute edition includes an alternate variation of “The Mirror” for voice and alto flute, whereas the oboe edition includes an alternate variation of “The Mirror” for voice and English horn.

It’s clear from hearing this music that Schnauber gets a real kick out of Milne’s poetry. The flute/oboe comments, echoes, etc. go with or against the voice line very effectively and entertainingly. These songs will have broad appeal to both players and audiences, and there’s a lot that a pair of performers could do with them. The music isn’t easy, but provides just the sort of challenges that the adventuresome player loves; in places, for example, the flute jumps from C7 to C4, plays multiphonics, and executes finger snaps. But, as the composer has pointed out, just because the music is somewhat demanding doesn’t mean that it should be presented seriously in performance; on the contrary, players should have fun with these pieces and convey the intended joy and playfulness of the work.

Note that both performers are to play from the score, so flutists and oboists may want to print their copy of the score single-sided to avoid a few difficult page turns.

  • Massenet - On Dit! - trans. Clarinet, Voice and Piano

Massenet OnDit VoClPf r nsmOn Dit!, by Jules Massenet

Transcribed for Clarinet, Voice and Piano by C. A. Vater

Score for Clarinet, Voice and Piano; Alternative Parts for A-Clarinet and B-flat-Clarinet, PDF $8.99

Massenet’s composition On dit! is a musical setting of the eponymous poem by Jean Roux in which the poet ponders how the word “love” is commonly and inevitably associated with the sweetness and delights of spring. In addition to the vocal line and piano accompaniment, Massenet provided On dit! with a prominent part for cello. The cello line can be readily adapted for clarinet, creating a lovely and suitable new version of the piece for clarinet, voice, and piano. Our Noteworthy Sheet Music edition includes a score in concert pitch, as well as individual parts for either A-clarinet or B-flat-clarinet transcribed from the original cello part. Clarinetists in possession of both A and B-flat instruments may develop a personal preference for playing this piece on one instrument over the other, based on tone quality, complementarity with a particular singer’s sound, etc.

Bridge 2Pieces Cl Pf nsmTwo Pieces: Pensiero and Allegro appassionato, by Frank Bridge

Transcribed for B-flat Clarinet and Piano by C.A.Vater

    Score and Part; PDF $10.99

Certain chamber works written for viola can also work very beautifully when transcribed for clarinet, and indeed may actually be coveted by clarinetists.  Brahms’ Two Songs for Voice, Viola and Piano, Op. 91 is one such piece, and our transcription has become one of NSM’s most popular publications.   Clarinetists may discover that our adaptation of the viola part of Frank Bridge’s Two Pieces: Pensiero and Allegro appassionato, written for viola and piano, is also well-conceived and enjoyable to play.  As suggested by their titles, these two pieces were written in very different styles, but they complement each other well, showing off Bridge’s composing versatility and providing performers an opportunity to display a range of emotions and capabilities.  In our edition, we have raised the Pensiero key from F minor to G minor, taken a few passages in both pieces 8va to bring them into clarinet range, and created clarinet-friendly adaptations for the viola’s occasional double stops, but otherwise the pieces remain as Bridge composed them.

  • Ross - Cockles and Mussels - Harp Ensemble

ross cm nsmCockles and Mussels, James Yorkston

Arranged for Multi-Level Harp Ensemble by Judith Ross

Score and Parts for Harps I, II, & III, PDF $10.50

Cockles and Mussels, also known as Molly Malone or In Dublin's Fair City, is a popular song thought to have been first published in Boston, MA, in 1876, in a collection of college songs.  The 1884 London version, published by Francis Brothers & Day, lists the piece as a comic song composed by James Yorkston.  The piece is especially beloved in the city of Dublin, where a statue of Molly Malone has been erected on Grafton Street.

Judith Ross, founder and director of the Massachusetts Harp Ensemble, has created numerous mixed level harp arrangements over the years.  She welcomes harpists of all levels of expertise into her ensemble, so most of her arrangements are designed to include parts of different levels of difficulty.  That way, anyone can have a chance to participate and join in the fun.  The Massachusetts Harp Ensemble is a Boston area treasure, enjoyed and appreciated by local harp students and their teachers, many of whom are already familiar with Ms. Ross' arrangements in manuscript form.  Now some of these works are available to the broader harp community as new, typeset editions prepared by Noteworthy Sheet Music.  Cockles and Mussels includes two intermediate level pedal harp parts and one easy lever harp part.

ross.croppy boy nsmThe Croppy Boy, Traditional Irish Ballad

Arranged for Multi-Level Harp Ensemble by Judith Ross

Score and Parts for Harps I, II, III, & IV, PDF $8.97

The Croppy Boy is one of the saddest lrish ballads of the 1798 rising.  The title refers to the young rebel soldiers, who wore their hair closely cropped.  This arrangement is specifically designed for performance by harpists at varying levels.  The Beginner, Easy, and lntermediate level parts are intended for lever harp, but can be played on pedal harp, and may be performed by one or more harpists.   The Advanced harp part, for the teacher or advanced student, is designed to be performed by one person on pedal harp, but can probably also be done on a lever harp having all the high and low strings.

Judith Ross received a B.M. with Distinction and M.A. from the Eastman School of Music.  She studied harp with Eileen Malone and Pierre Jamet, and harmony, keyboard, and composition with Nadia Boulanger (considered one of the greatest musical pedagogues of the 20th century).  She is a winner of the Paderewski Gold Medal in piano.  Ms. Ross has given frequent solo and orchestral performances throughout New England, and is the founder and director of the Massachusetts Harp Ensemble.   She has taught at the State University College of NY at Fredonia, Boston University, Lesley College, New England Conservatory, and El Coro de Niños in San Juan, Puerto Rico.   For 37 years she taught solfège, harmony, form and analysis, and harp at the Longy School of Music in Cambridge, MA, where she is former Chair of the Theory Department.

Jules Herman's Grands Duos Concertantes (Opus 86) are works of ingenuity, charm, brilliance, grace, and humor.  Long overlooked, they are extraordinarily fine examples of concert-worthy duets of the late 19th century.  Originally published by Choudens in Paris about 1885, the Grand Duos were dedicated to composer François-Auguste Gevaert (1828–1908), then director of the Royal Conservatory of Brussels.  Flutists will find these works challenging and rewarding, teachers of advancing students will be amazed by their utility, and audiences will be enchanted.  (excerpted from PHB's © foreword)

Note that these duets make for excellent sight-reading training... the music is interesting and demanding, and the parts are nicely balanced.  All three duets have three movements each.  Duo 1: Allegro moderato; Adagio sostenuto; and Rondo allegro.  Duo 2: Moderato; Scherzando; and Polonaise.  Duo 3: Allegretto vivace con brio; Air Varié, Andante; and Boléro, Moderato.

Carl Maria von Weber (1786-1826) was a German piano virtuoso and prolific composer who made major, influential contributions to many kinds of music and is widely credited with being a founder of the Romantic school.  Weber's rousing Polacca Brillante in E major, Op.72 (alternatively known as L'Hilarité or Grande Polonaise brillante) was written originally for piano solo.  It was composed and first published in 1819, and was later transcribed by Liszt for piano and orchestra.

We came across an anonymous arrangement of this piece, a duet for two flutes, among the print copies included in the Gassett Collection.  The duet is great fun for flutists, so we created a renotated edition of the arrangement, with the goal of modernizing the format and correcting some likely inaccuracies.  Our new edition includes a score at no extra charge as well as the two flute parts.

    mcdonald.three four-note flute duets.image 240pxThree Four-Note Flute Duets, Op.448b, by John D. McDonald

Contemporary Composition for Two Flutes, PDF $2.99

"Composed for Ethel Farny and her flute students at the Rivers Music School, these short duets sprout initially from the first flute/violin duet of Several Strands, Op. 448a.  This Grazioso is indeed made from only four pitches. Similarly, Murmurando confines itself to a four-note knot until its final dyad.  The third duet, Con Eleganza, stretches the four-note concept a bit more. Each instrument has its own four-pitch pattern, and a coda leaves the four-note idea behind all together, concluding the set with six slower, somewhat more chromatic bars that could very well lead to future music of more emotional complexity.  Perhaps there will be more duets to come."    ― John McDonald, November 2009

John McDonald is a member of The Mockingbird Trio, directs the Tufts Composers Concert Series, and serves on the boards of several performance organizations in New England.  He has recently fulfilled commissions from The Chamber Orchestra of Boston, pianist David Holzman, The Firebird Ensemble (for an Apple Hill Center for Chamber Music Residency, with support from a Meet the Composer MetLife Creative Connections Award), and the ANA Trio (Fredonia University; soprano, cello, and piano), among others.  Recent performances by McDonald at the Goethe Institut of Boston, at Tufts, and at many other venues have been highly acclaimed.

Eugène Walckiers studied composition at the Paris Conservatoire with Anton Reicha and became a masterful, inventive, and prolific composer and arranger of 19th century chamber music.  Both his original compositions and his arrangements are deeply significant in their expression of a particular, highly developed aesthetic approach.  Walckiers' 2me Livre de Duos pour 2 Flutes, Opus 11, was dedicated to his friend Théodore Baltazaro and comprises three duets of three movements each.  NSM has re-notated all of the Opus 11 duets using a modern music composition software program.

A review written by Katherine Borst Jones was published in the September, 2013 issue Flute Talk magazine.  "The publication contains extensive notes and material on the composer.  The second duet is great material for sightreading as well as studying the 19th century style of composition. Printed as flute 1 and flute 2, separately, the copy is clear and easy to read."  Click to read the full review

Eugène Walckiers (1793-1866) studied composition at the Paris Conservatoire with Anton Reicha and became a masterful, inventive, and prolific composer and arranger of 19th century chamber music.  Walckiers was also a flutist, having been a protégé of the legendary Tulou.  Rockstro, in his Treatise on the Flute (London, 1889), paid great tribute to Walckiers when he wrote: "The duets, trios and quartets of Walckiers belong to the highest school of French art, and prove their composer to have been a man of real genius.  They are exceedingly imaginative, occasionally rather eccentric, yet always elegant, charming, and scholarly."

Rosamund Plummer wrote an independent review of Noteworthy Sheet Music's edition of Walckiers' Duetto 1 which was reproduced on the NSM website after first being published by Flute Focus.

Jason Ng & Campbell Wang won a Gold Award in the Secondary Duet Class of the 2012 New Zealand Woodwind Competition for their performance of Eugène Walckiers' 5th Book of Duets—Duetto I, published by Noteworthy Sheet Music.

  • Vercoe - To Music - Flute Alone

to music cover imageTo Music, by Elizabeth Vercoe

Contemporary Composition for Solo Flute, PDF $6.99

Dr. Elizabeth Vercoe has been a composer at the St. Petersburg Music Festival in Russia, the Cité International des Arts in Paris, and the MacDowell Colony, and held the Acuff Chair of Excellence at Austin Peay State University in 2003. She has won many awards, commissions, and publications along with grants from the Artists Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts. Her music is recorded on the Centaur, Capstone, Owl, Leonarda, and Parma labels and is published in print edition by Arsis Press.

To Music (2003) is a short, atmospheric solo for flute in four contrasting sections.  At times the music is virtuosic, occasionally calling for multiphonics and other special effects. The titles of the four sections are taken from the haunting poetry of the Russian writer, Anna Akhmatova, a poet deeply interested in music.

Click to access a recording of To Music performed by flutist Peter H. Bloom in 2011 which has been posted on YouTube.

To Music can also be heard on the PARMA Recordings all-Vercoe CDkleemation cd titled Kleemation and Other Works byElizabeth Vercoe, which has received excellent critical reviews.  Click to read an IAWM Journal review Dr. Laura G. Kafka or one by Lee Passarella published by Audiophile Audition magazine.  "There's more poetic reference in To Music, the titles of whose four short sections are taken from Russian poet Anna Akhmatova's work.  Like the Fantasy, it successfully showcases the colors and techniques available to the modern practitioner of her instrument, in this case the flute."

  • Samolis - Canal - Soprano & Flute

    Samolis.Canal.Cover.webCanal, by Matt Samolis

Contemporary Composition for Soprano and Flute, PDF $13.95

Matt Samolis began studying flute, then later composition and tenor banjo. He has worked with ensembles at New England Conservatory, Brandeis University, and Tufts University, as well as Open Hand Theatre, Pilgrim Research Collaborative, and numerous other projects.  Currently, his primary focus is composition, curating, and performing as a flutist with various local groups, as well as his drone alliance, The Metal & Glass Ensemble.

Canal is written in a free, self referential style, and uses the text of Roy Campbell's poem of the same name, written in 1920.  Despite the somber text, the mood is idyllic and somewhat reminiscent of the contemporary musical language in use at that time.  Each player also has a brief ad lib section, where they can interpret the material as they choose.

Contemporary Composition for Two Flutes, PDF $17.99

Duo for Two Flutes was written using twelve tone techniques.  The original tone row was divided in half, with each set of six tones being used to generate one of the flute parts.  Frequently changing time signatures reflect compositional organization of the pitches, and does not establish meter.  The piece has a playful, somewhat mechanical feel. samolis-webTo listen to bits of a recording of Duo for Two Flutes performed by Matt Samolis and Peter H. • Schubert - Sonata in C Major - Piano

schubert.sonata in c major nsmSonata in C Major, D.613, by Franz Schubert

    Completion by John W. Pratt

    Piano Score, PDF $7.99

Schubert's D.613 consists of two unfinished movements in C major. The first, in sonata form, includes an entire exposition of 86 bars and 35 bars of development ending in a dramatic turn toward E major.  We complete this beautiful movement here by adding, in Schubert's style, a suitably proportioned return to C major, a regular recapitulation with a modified bridge passage, and a new coda looking toward the heavenly Adagio in E major commonly assumed to be the intended slow movement to follow.

The noted Schubert scholar Brian Newbould wrote the following to Mr. Pratt regarding his completion of D.613: "I find your arguments for completing the piece in the way you do perfectly convincing..... As for the completion itself, I've read and played it through a few times and it runs well.  You have fulfilled your aims, in just about as self-effacing a way as you can - which is clearly your hope."
