Schubert Erlking Trio nsmErlkönig, Franz Schubert

Arranged for Flute, Cello, and Piano by John W. Pratt

Piano Score and Parts for Flute and Cello; PDF $11.99

Franz Schubert (1797-1828), inspired by reading Goethe's poem, wrote his song "Erlkönig" in a few hours in 1815. The song was an immediate hit, and continues to be popular to the present day. Numerous transcriptions have been prepared, but surprisingly none that we found for flute, cello, and piano. John Pratt has created such a trio arrangement, listed here, and also a duet version of the piece with Schubert's solo part adopted without change but with a less punishing alternative to Schubert's piano accompaniment.

Excerpted from Mr. Pratt's © preface:
"In the trio arrangement, the flute provides a natural voice for the child and for the mysterious Erlking, whose words are in the child's head. The cello makes a natural father. The narration is mostly given to the cello also, but the flute takes over when the child is mentioned in bars MM 24-30, and joins the cello when the ride is ending in anguish and distress (MM 139-145). The piano is treated as a member of a trio rather than an accompaniment to a voice singing words. The presence of the cello helps free the piano from the constant pounding and allows it to employ a wider range of expressive sonorities than Schubert's, befitting the absence of words. One might view the result as a kind of tone poem."

schubert.sonata in c major nsmSonata in C Major, D.613, by Franz Schubert

Completion by John W. Pratt

Piano Score, PDF $7.99

Schubert's D.613 consists of two unfinished movements in C major. The first, in sonata form, includes an entire exposition of 86 bars and 35 bars of development ending in a dramatic turn toward E major.  We complete this beautiful movement here by adding, in Schubert's style, a suitably proportioned return to C major, a regular recapitulation with a modified bridge passage, and a new coda looking toward the heavenly Adagio in E major commonly assumed to be the intended slow movement to follow.

The noted Schubert scholar Brian Newbould wrote the following to Mr. Pratt regarding his completion of D.613: "I find your arguments for completing the piece in the way you do perfectly convincing. .... As for the completion itself, I've read and played it through a few times and it runs well.  You have fulfilled your aims, in just about as self-effacing a way as you can - which is clearly your hope."

Schubert Erlking Duo NSMErlkönig, by Franz Schubert

Arranged for Cello (or Viola or Alto Flute) and Piano by John W. Pratt

Piano Score and Parts for Cello/Voice, Viola, and Alto Flute; PDF $11.99

Franz Schubert (1797-1828), inspired by reading Goethe's poem, wrote his song "Erlkönig" in a few hours in 1815. The song was an immediate hit, and continues to be popular to the present day. John Pratt has created a trio arrangement for flute, cello, and piano (click for more information), and also the duo version offered here with Schubert's solo voice part transposed for cello (or viola or alto flute), and with a less arduous alternative to Schubert's piano accompaniment.

Excerpted from Mr. Pratt's © preface:
"In the duo arrangement, Schubert's solo part is adopted without change. Thus the piano must provide the entire accompaniment, but rocking triplets and other pianistically felicitous passagework replace Schubert's unremitting repetition. The range of sonorities is also wider than Schubert's, though more restrained than that of the trio arrangement, where the flute enlarges the musical terrain. This accompaniment is offered as a less punishing alternative to Schubert's, to be played with a singer or any solo instrument. Solo parts are provided for voice or cello, viola, and alto flute."

Piano score, 6 pages; Cello, Viola, and Alto Flute parts, 2 pages each; Total, 22 pages.

We Gather Together - Netherlands folk song   optional piccolo part

Our friend John Pratt decided to liven up the traditional Thanksgiving hymn when he plays it at his extended family's annual feast, and we decided to make his version freely available to others similarly inclined. The first stanza is traditional, the second adds all the octaves John is able to play, and the third replaces the usual bass line with one which marches along step-wise, mostly in eighths, leading to a few nontraditional harmonies.  For 2022 he added an optional piccolo part to accompany the piano and voice score.
He has also made a version without octaves for two players at one piano.    We Gather Together, 4-hand version without octaves

Large-font lyrics for Christmas carols and Thanksgiving songs [1] to [42]
One of the most common problems with song books for community sing-alongs, especially for seniors, is that the lyrics are too small to be seen easily.  John Pratt has created large-font lyrics sheets with the words (public domain) for 42 popular songs for the holiday season.  Open the pdf by clicking the link above and print as few or as many as you'd like.

Mr. Pratt has also created a booklet format for the large-font lyrics for holiday songs [1] to [42], called The NSM Carol Book, which is handy for group sing-alongs and is easily re-usable.  The booklets should be printed double-sided on 8.5" x 11" paper (or 9" x 12", if available), stapled in the middle and folded to form a 5.5" x 8.5" booklet.  Since printing directions will be different for every printer, we leave it to our visitors to know what settings to use on their own equipment to have all pages come out in order, right-side up, etc.  With my Canon ImageCLASS MF4890 machine, for example, I would do the following: print using fit to page, landscape orientation, 2-sided, flipping on short edge; then staple along the mid-line and fold down the center along the staples so that the Contents are on the front page.  Note that a long-arm stapler (reaching to 5.5") is required for manual stapling, but some institutions may have printer/copiers that can auto-staple along the mid-line.

Contemporary Composition for Flute and Piano

Flute Part and Piano Score, PDF $16.99

Zenon Slawinski studied music theory and composition at the University of Michigan with Leslie Bassett, William Bolcom, and William Albright. He also studied Campanology with Hudson Ladd. After graduating with honors he pursued a career in both music and graphic design. Mr. Slawinski was co-music director for the Peabody and Ohio State award winning Children's Radio Theatre program, and scored numerous independent and industrial films and films for the Smithsonian Institution that aired at Smithsonian museums and on PBS. He wrote the music to the popular political talk show The John McLaughlin Group. Mr. Slawinski was a founding partner of a multimedia production company and recording studio working in the early interactive days on educational and entertainment music projects in the CDi and CD-ROM formats, many of which won numerous awards. For more details of Zenon Slawinski's biography, please see the Composers section of the NSM website.

Bagette no. 4 is from a set of four Bagettes written by Zenon Slawinski for his flutist wife, for the two of them to play together. The piece showcases the flute and has challenging moments for both players throughout. The spelling of "bagette" is intentional. The piece opens and closes with a quick ostinato in ¾ in the piano part that lays the foundation for the feel of the entire Bagette. The second section is more pensive and contemplative, with the piano taking the lead initially. The next section is bold and in a new key - B major - and here the flute and piano engage in a playful interaction. The composer intends for the players to put their own spin on the piece and interpret the music freely.

You may also listen to audio of the piece, recorded on the composer's Yamaha MOTIF ES with the sampled piano and flute sounds found in the instrument.  Click to listen

Customers who purchase the sheet music to Bagette no. 4 are entitled to a free rehearsal mp3 of the piano track with which the flutist can play along.

Slawinski Cookies nsmCookies, by Zenon Slawinski

Contemporary Composition for Flute and Piano

Flute Part and Piano Score, PDF $24.50

From the preface by Zenon Slawinski:

The Cookies came about because my wife and I had been exploring the various compositions and arrangements available for flute and piano and I felt that we needed something new for our time and our audience. We live in a constantly changing world yet we love to hang our hat on the past, especially when it comes to music.  I wanted to create a set of pieces that would not only be enjoyable for the listener but provide the players with a high level of satisfaction.

These pieces range in difficulty from the rather simple and easy to play (Cookies 1, 2, 4, 7), to the intermediate (Cookies 5, 8, 9, 11), and to the more challenging (Cookies 3, 6, 10, 12).

A special note about Cookie No. 5.  This piece was influenced by the Jazz tunes in the popular series of Real Books which follow a common practice in today's "chart" or "lead sheets" where the melody line is written out and chords are marked for the accompaniment to play.  This gives a lot of freedom initially to the piano.  As the flutists becomes more familiar with their part, I would encourage them to get off the page and try some of their own lines.

I purposely gave few performance markings so that players can create their own.  Interpret these freely and have fun.

Zenon Slawinski, September 17, 2014

You may listen to some short audio samples of the Cookies, recorded on the composer’s Yamaha MOTIF ES with the sampled piano and flute sounds found in the instrument.

Tchaikovsky ArabDanceAflPf nsmArab Dance, by P. Tchaikovsky

Arranged for Flute and Harp or Piano by Mary Jane Rupert

Transcribed for Alto Flute by C.A.Vater

Alto Flute Part and Harp or Piano Score, PDF $7.99

Mary Jane Rupert's arrangement of The Nutcracker for flute and harp or piano includes all of the pieces from the original Suite, Op. 71a, except the Overture.   Dr. Rupert stayed as close as possible to the original orchestration, in terms of key, harmony, register, and color.  Originally published in 1988, the arrangement was re-edited by Dr. Rupert in 2013 for publication as separate flute/piano and flute/harp editions by Noteworthy Sheet Music.  After creating the new flute editions, Noteworthy Sheet Music's editors realized that one of the pieces of the suite in particular, Arab Dance, would work beautifully on alto flute.   We created an alto flute transcription of the flute part, both for ourselves and for our alto flutist friends.

We offer separate versions of the score for piano or harp, although in the case of the Arab Dance the harp-specific notation is minimal compared to some of the other pieces contained in the complete edition of The Nutcracker arranged for flute and harp.

Gassett Collection - Facsimile Edition by C.A.Vater/Noteworthy Sheet Music, with a Foreword by Peter H. Bloom

Flute Part and Piano Score, PDF $12.75

Jean-Louis Tulou (1786-1865) was a prominent, virtuoso French flutist, composer, and flute maker. He was a member of the orchestra of the Paris Opéra, and served as professor of flute at the Paris Conservatoire from 1829-1856. Tulou composed a great many works for flute, including 5 concertos and numerous solos and duets. In 1835 he published his "Méthode de Flûte", still valuable today as a guide to performance practice in the early 19th century and for instruction on playing pre-Boehm keyed flutes. We offer here our facsimile edition of Tulou's Introduction et Rondo pour la Flûte avec Accompagnement de Piano (Op.49), an energetic, enjoyable romp for flute.

vercoe.kleemation nsmKleemation, by Elizabeth Vercoe

Original Composition for Flute and Piano

Flute Part and Piano Score, PDF $16.95

Kleemation for flute and piano is in five short movements based on five drawings by Paul Klee titled: Goodbye to You, Please!, Afraid on the Beach, More Will Be Marching Soon, and Woman Sowing Weeds.  Described as "highly abstract yet accessible," the piece was commissioned by Austin Peay University in Tennessee and received its premiere there in 2003.  The New England premiere was at the Duxbury Art Museum in 2004 by the duo "2" (flutist Peter H. Bloom and pianist Mary Jane Rupert).  "2" has since performed the piece on tours in the U.S., Thailand, Australia, and New Zealand.  Click to read a testimonial to Elizabeth Vercoe's composition Kleemation written by Mr. Bloom. kleemation cd

Kleemation was recorded by "2" and can be heard on the PARMA Recordings all-Vercoe CD entitled Kleemation and Other Works by Elizabeth Vercoe.  In an IAWM Journal CD review Dr. Laura G. Kafkawrites: “Vercoe musically renders Klee’s drawings with all the humor, fear, and reality that make each one leap from its canvas and dance.”  Click to read Dr. Kafka’s full review. In another review published by Audiophile Audition magazine on September 26, 2013, Lee Passarella writes: "Vercoe (b. 1941) also shows a willingness to adapt different musical styles and elements to her basic idiom: the essential atonality of her music is leavened with some well-chosen pop influences where appropriate to the subject matter at hand.  That includes Kleemation, a work based on drawings by Swiss modernist painter Paul Klee.  Klee's sometimes whimsical, sometimes troubling art turns for its inspiration to the uninhibited world of the child artist."
