The Rondo in B minor, D.895 (alternatively known as Rondeau brillant) was written for violin and piano in 1826 by the great Austrian composer Franz Peter Schubert. Dedicated to the young violin virtuoso Josef Slawjk, the Rondo is demanding in both the solo and piano parts. The work consists of an Andante introduction and an Allegro rondo, and is quite long at 713 measures and typically some thirteen minutes or more in duration. Inexplicably, the piece is less familiar to players and audiences than many of Schubert’s other works. Brian Newbould, renowned composer, conductor, author, and Schubert expert, wrote of the Rondo in his treatise Schubert: The Music and the Man (University of California Press, Jan 1, 1997, p365): “Not surprisingly, perhaps, it is little known because it is seldom played. But it is also undervalued: it scintillates, dances and sings, with a blend of infectious joy, tireless energy, rhythmic zip and ‒ from time to time ‒ heart-melting turns of melody and harmony.”
These characteristics and the way the music realizes them are not only suitable to but often even suggestive of a wind instrument. Our transcription provides effective flute-friendly alternatives for the violin’s double-stops as well as for notes that fall below the flute’s range, so the piece can be played comfortably and beautifully on flute. The Rondo is virtuosic in places, showy and exciting, and overall great fun to play. The Noteworthy Sheet Music edition of our transcribed flute part does not include a re-notated copy of the score, since high-quality PDFs of the piano and violin score are freely available in the public domain and are sufficient to use along with our flute part, in lieu of violin. Franz Schubert (1797-1828) wrote his three violin sonatas Opus 137 when he was barely 19. They were published posthumously as 'Sonatinas', perhaps for marketing reasons, but they are full-scale sonatas in traditional classical style and format, the first having three movements and the others four. These plus the violin sonata in A of the next year constitute fully half of Schubert's known works for piano and solo instrument.
Schubert's Op.137 sonatas are truly delightful, and we have adapted the violin parts for alto flute. Where appropriate, changes have been introduced to better accommodate the range, sonority, and general characteristics of the alto flute. Such modifications include occasional octave adjustments, dynamic changes, and suitable flute-friendly alternatives to the violin's doublestops. We provide our transcribed alto flute parts; the piano scores are readily available in the public domain as free pdf downloads from imslp.org/.

This accompaniment is offered as a less punishing alternative to Schubert's, to be played with a singer or any solo instrument. Solo parts are provided for voice or cello, viola, and alto flute."

"Robert Schumann (1810-1856) wrote Fünf Stücke im Volkston (Five Pieces in Folk Style), Opus 102, for violoncello and piano on April 13-15, 1849. // Fünf Stücke im Volkstonwas premiered on Schumann's 40th birthday, June 8, 1850 by his wife, Clara, and their friend Andreas Grabau, the dedicatee, a cellist in the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. Clara thought the pieces beguiling, fresh, original, and under-appreciated. They have been viewed as precursors of his cello concerto, composed in October, 1850, and first performed after his death in honor of his 50th birthday. // Just as folk songs may appropriately be sung by a great variety of voices, it is perhaps appropriate that songs without words in folk style may be played by a great variety of solo instruments and piano. In any event, Schumann's Fünf Stücke im Volkston have been arranged for oboe, viola, clarinet, alto saxophone, horn, bass clarinet, bassoon, trombone, and baritone saxophone, at least. Sonata in A Minor, Opus 105, was the first of two violin sonatas composed by Robert Schumann in 1851. The first movement has a gentle melody very well suited to the alto flute and the kind of flowing piano accompaniment and overlapping harmonies one finds in much of Schumann's chamber music. The Allegretto, with its hesitations and shifting moods and motifs, is also well suited to the alto flute. The restless final movement is exciting and effective (and a workout for both players) whatever solo instrument is used. The range and dynamics of Schumann's violin part, as well as its character, fit the alto flute's nature and capabilities beautifully. Clara Schumann’s Drei Romanzen für Pianoforte und Violine, Op. 22, were written in 1853 and dedicated to the Schumanns’ great friend, the famous Hungarian violin virtuoso Joseph Joachim, with whom Clara performed the Three Romances when they concertized together on tours across Europe. The Romances are lovely, short pieces; melodic and expressive, they epitomize the Romantic era and represent true chamber music in the sense that both instruments are featured comparably, rather than the piano having a merely accompaniment role. They are nicely adaptable to wind instruments, and are particularly lovely when played on alto flute. Our transcription required few modifications to bring the original violin part completely in range for alto flute and provide flute-friendly, musically-appropriate alternatives to the occasional violin double-stop. Some flutists may wish to mix and match the three movements, preferring to play one or two of the Romances on alto flute and the third on concert flute, or vice versa; so, to that end, we have included in this edition a complete alternative part adapted for C-flute. We do not provide a re-notated copy of the score, however, since high-quality PDFs of the piano and violin score are freely available in the public domain, and are easy to use along with our flute transcriptions of the violin line. Alexander Scriabin (1872-1915), the mystic Russian composer with music to match, wrote nine mind-bending orchestral works and myriad mostly miniature piano pieces. He began as a "Russian Chopin" and ended planning a week-long "Mysterium" to be performed in the Himalayas using "an orchestra, a large mixed choir, an instrument with visual effects, dancers, a procession, incense, and... mists and lights" (Wikipedia).
The Romance of 1890, his only chamber work except one variation for string quartet, is nearer the Chopin end of that spectrum, though the piano part adds harmonic and rhythmic complexities not evident from the solo part alone.

In most classic rounds the second voice begins and plays (or sings) the same melody as the first voice. That's the case here too for three of the five Dessert Rounds. Rounds 3 and 4 are different. In Round 3 - The Chocolate Chocolate Chip Cookie - the second voice plays the same melody but a third higher. In Round 4 - Sweet Potato Flan - the second voice plays the melody a 4th higher. // The Dessert Rounds are relatively simple and should not pose any difficulties for most intermediate players, although there are some tricky meter changes in Round 2 - Chocolate Mint Ice Dream - if you practice this slowly you'll soon be able to get past the meter changes and simply enjoy your dessert. // Round 4 - Sweet Potato Flan - is written in 7/4. // I purposely left off many performance markings so the players can make their own mark on the compositions. Interpret these pieces freely and have fun.

Zenon Slawinski studied music theory and composition at the University of Michigan with Leslie Bassett, William Bolcom, and William Albright. He also studied Campanology with Hudson Ladd. After graduating with honors he pursued a career in both music and graphic design. Mr. Slawinski was co-music director for the Peabody and Ohio State award winning Children's Radio Theatre program, and scored numerous independent and industrial films and films for the Smithsonian Institution that aired at Smithsonian museums and on PBS. He wrote the music to the popular political talk show The John McLaughlin Group. Mr. Slawinski was a founding partner of a multimedia production company and recording studio working in the early interactive days on educational and entertainment music projects in the CDi and CD-ROM formats, many of which won numerous awards. Bagette no. 4 is from a set of four Bagettes written by Zenon Slawinski for his flutist wife, for the two of them to play together. The piece showcases the flute and has challenging moments for both players throughout. The spelling of "bagette" is intentional. The piece opens and closes with a quick ostinato in ¾ in the piano part that lays the foundation for the feel of the entire Bagette. The second section is more pensive and contemplative, with the piano taking the lead initially. The next section is bold and in a new key - B major - and here the flute and piano engage in a playful interaction. The composer intends for the players to put their own spin on the piece and interpret the music freely.

The Cookies came about because my wife and I had been exploring the various compositions and arrangements available for flute and piano and I felt that we needed something new for our time and our audience. We live in a constantly changing world yet we love to hang our hat on the past, especially when it comes to music. I wanted to create a set of pieces that would not only be enjoyable for the listener but provide the players with a high level of satisfaction.
These pieces range in difficulty from the rather simple and easy to play (Cookies 1, 2, 4, 7), to the intermediate (Cookies 5, 8, 9, 11), and to the more challenging (Cookies 3, 6, 10, 12).
A special note about Cookie No. 5. This piece was influenced by the Jazz tunes in the popular series of Real Books which follow a common practice in today's "chart" or "lead sheets" where the melody line is written out and chords are marked for the accompaniment to play. This gives a lot of freedom initially to the piano. As the flutists becomes more familiar with their part, I would encourage them to get off the page and try some of their own lines.
I purposely gave few performance markings so that players can create their own. Interpret these freely and have fun.

Mary Jane Rupert's arrangement of The Nutcracker for flute and harp or piano includes all of the pieces from the original Suite, Op. 71a, except the Overture. Dr. Rupert stayed as close as possible to the original orchestration, in terms of key, harmony, register, and color. Originally published in 1988, the arrangement was re-edited by Dr. Rupert in 2013 for publication as separate flute/piano and flute/harp editions by Noteworthy Sheet Music. After creating the new flute editions, Noteworthy Sheet Music's editors realized that one of the pieces of the suite in particular, Arab Dance, would work beautifully on alto flute. We created an alto flute transcription of the flute part, both for ourselves and for our alto flutist friends.
We offer separate versions of the score for piano or harp, although in the case of the Arab Dance the harp-specific notation is minimal compared to some of the other pieces contained in the complete edition of The Nutcracker arranged for flute and harp.

"Trepak (Russian Dance)," "Arab Dance" and "Chinese Dance" are all pretty readily playable. "Dance of the Reed Flutes" is more challenging and the harp harmonizes with the flute in thirds. Jean-Louis Tulou (1786-1865) was a prominent, virtuoso French flutist, composer, and flute maker. He was a member of the orchestra of the Paris Opéra, and served as professor of flute at the Paris Conservatoire from 1829-1856. Tulou composed a great many works for flute, including 5 concertos and numerous solos and duets. In 1835 he published his "Méthode de Flûte", still valuable today as a guide to performance practice in the early 19th century and for instruction on playing pre-Boehm keyed flutes. We offer here our facsimile edition of Tulou's Introduction et Rondo pour la Flûte avec Accompagnement de Piano (Op.49), an energetic, enjoyable romp for flute.

Butterfly Effects is an intriguing and varied piece in seven sections for flute and harp in which the flutist is asked to play bass, alto, piccolo and concert flutes. The titles are the names of butterflies: Mourningcloak, Banded Blue Pierrot, Common Jezebel, Question Mark, Monkey Puzzle, Karner Blues, and Psyche.
Excerpted from Elizabeth Vercoe's preface: "Butterfly Effects for flute and harp was written for the duo "2", with flutist Peter H. Bloom and harpist Mary Jane Rupert, who premiered the first parts of the piece in Bangkok and the entire work in Illinois in 2010. Along with the butterflies themselves, a quotation from Zhuangzi was the starting point for the music: "Am I a human who dreamt of being a butterfly or am I now a butterfly who dreams of being human?" The Taoist philosopher's dream illustrates, among other lessons, his sense of oneness with all living beings. // All seven movements are short, some only a minute in length. Mourningcloak, for alto flute and harp, is somber and reflective. Banded Blue Pierrot (concert flute) is short and glittering. Common Jezebel is a sultry tango for bass flute and harp that becomes increasingly chromatic and contrapuntal, requiring the harpist to do some fancy footwork. Question Mark, also for bass flute, requires the flutist to use "beat boxing" and key slap techniques that maximize the percussive qualities of the flute. Monkey Puzzle, in a kind of mimicry of the confusing antennae and pseudo antennae of the insect, flutters along to the middle of the piece and then proceeds backwards to the beginning in what is known as retrograde motion. Karner Blues adopts some of the riffs of blues instrumentalists and singers in the only movement for piccolo. Psyche, a word meaning breath or soul in Greek, is for concert flute and reminds us again of the Zhuangzi dream and the oneness of all living beings."
Butterfly Effects may be performed by one flutist playing multiple instruments, or by multiple flutists each playing one instrument for the relevant movement(s).

Peter H. Bloom gave a lecture on “Effective Writing for Flutes and the Contemporary Flutist” at the 2018 Snow Pond Composers Workshop. In his presentation, Mr. Bloom discussed various topics using four contemporary works published by Noteworthy Sheet Music, including Butterfly Effects, as examples. We later published a free text version of this excellent presentation on our website, in the Reviews and Articles section, including some of the audio clips and supplemental written materials that Mr. Bloom used as demonstrations.
The Elizabeth Vercoe CD "Butterfly Effects and Other Works" was released in November 2018. The CD is available through Navona Records and features the title track performed by duo "2". Here is a quote from Cinemusical's review of the CD: "The album opens with a multi-movement work for flutes and harp, Butterfly Effects (2009). Across the seven movements, Vercoe explores the qualities of different instruments in the flute family: alto flute, bass flute, concert flute, and piccolo. The music has a slight impressionistic quality to it, aided by the harp’s material. Against this is first a rather dreamy, dark opening movement (“Mourningcloak”); a faster-paced flitting “Banded Blue Parrot”; a tango (“Common Jezebel”); intriguing effects like beat-boxing (“Question Mark”) and blues riffs (“Karner Blues”); and a palindromic compositional technique (“Monkey Puzzle”). The flute lines allow for registral exploration and often features some sinuous lines. Some are sultrier than others, but it is as if these are all like watercolor brushstrokes that tend to be somewhat introspective in this often stunningly beautiful work." Another nice review of this CD, written by Nicole Riner, came out in the Flutist Quarterly Spring 2019 edition; here's a quote: "I had the pleasure of reviewing the sheet music for Butterfly Effects for this publication in 2015 and found it to be wonderfully diverse and intriguing. /// Bloom and Rupert perform this work deftly and with a great sense of unity”.

Described by the New York Times as a piece with 'timbral adventures and lovely moments', Fantavia for flute and percussion is based on the rhythms and melodies of North American birdcalls. Some of the calls are as familiar as the orioles and robins of a suburban back yard, while others like the common loon are recollected on awakening at dawn in the wilderness. Although a literal transcription was the starting point for each call, the music is intended as a fantasy.
Fantavia has been performed at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, at Merkin Hall in New York, at the National Flute Convention in Colorado and on several U.S. tours of the Armstrong Duo.
